I. Objectives: Ss can

-  identify  different kinds of sentences.

-  practice changing direct sentences into reported speech.

II. Content:

A. THEORY:

Các dạng câu trực tiếp chuyển sang gián tiếp:

    1.Commands and requests in reported speech:

           Direct speech:                (Don’t) + V + O/A

           Reported speech:         S + asked/ told + O + (not) + to V + …….

           Use:     To report a command, request

           Ex:     a) He said, “Can you meet me after class”?

                         à He asked me to meet him after class.

                     b) “Don’t stay up late” my mother said to me

                         à My mother asked me not to stay up late

    2.Advice in reported speech:

        Direct speech:         S + should/ ought to/had better + bare-inf

  Reported speech:    S + Said/ told (+ that) +S + should/ought to/had better + V-inf

                        Or:    S + advised + O + (not) + V-infinitive

Ex: “You should stop smoking,” he said

     àHe said/ told (that) I should stop smoking.

           à or : He advised me to stop smoking.

    3. Dạng câu kể/phát biểu ( statements):

        Direct speech:         S + V+ O/A

        Reported speech:   S + said + S + V (lùi 1 thì)

                Cách chuyển:      +  Đổi ngôi.

                                             + Đổi thì (lùi lại1 thì):

            - Hiện tại đơn à Quá khứ đơn.

        Ex: “I feel sick” (Tôi cảm thấy mệt) à He said he felt sick. (Anh ấy nói rằng anh ấy

            (Ngôi “I” chuyển thành ngôi “He”, động từ feel chuyển sang quá khứ là felt)

            - Hiện tại tiếp diễn à Quá khứ tiếp diễn.

              Ex: “I’m writing a letter” à He said he was writing a letter.

            - May à Might.

            - Can à Could.

     4. Dạng câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng các vấn từ (Wh-questions):

         Direct speech:         Wh-word + be  + S +  O/A

                                         Wh-word + auxiliary verb + S  + V +  O/A

         Reported speech:   S+ asked + O + Wh-word + S + be (lùi thì) +  O/A

                                   S+ asked + O + Wh-word+ S + Verb(lùi thì)  +  O/A (bỏ trợ ĐT)

             Cách chuyển:

            - Chuyển Said à Asked.

            - Giữ nguyên từ hỏi, chuyển về khẳng định hoặc phủ định tuỳ trường hợp.

            - Đổi ngôi, đổi thì, đổi trạng từ chỉ thời gian.

                 Ex: She said: “Where did you met him yesterday ?”                   

            - Dựa vào quy tắc nêu trên ta chuyển:

                  + Said à Asked

                  + You à I.

                  + Giữ nguyên từ hỏi là Why

                  + met à had met.

                  + yesterdayà the day before

                  + Bỏ dấu ngoặc kép.

            Cụ thể: She said: “Why did you met him ?”

                        à She asked me Why I had met him the day before.

  5. Dạng câu hỏi trả lời Yes/No (Yes/No questions):

         Direct speech:         Be  + S +  O/A?

                                         Auxiliary verb + S  + V +  O/A?

                                         Modal verb + S  + V +  O/A?

 

         Reported speech:   S+ asked +  O + if/whether + S + be (lùi thì) +  O/A

                        S+ asked + O + if/whether + S + Verb(lùi thì)  +  O/A (bỏ trợ ĐT)

                        S+ asked + O + if/whether + S + modal Verb(lùi thì)  + V-ìnfi+  O/A

            - Said à Asked.

            - Trước khi thuật lại, ta thêm If hoặc Whether (liệu rằng).

            - Chuyển về câu khẳng định hoặc phủ định rồi đổi ngôi, đổi thì.

               Ex:   My mother said: “Are you going to clean your room ?”                    

                       à My mother asked me if I was going to clean my room.

                        “ Do you live in Huong Son?” He asked her

                        à He asked whether  She lived in Huong Son.

                        “ Can you swim?” Lan asked me

                        àLan asked me if I could swim.  

             (Nếu câu trực tiếp sd modal verb : Could/Might thì ko phải lùi thì)

 

   Bảng chuyển đổi thì, tính từ chỉ định, trạng từ chỉ thời gian và trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn:

* Lưu ý khi làm bài tập về câu chủ động – bị động và câu gián tiếp:

      - Học thuộc ngữ pháp, cách chuyển.

      - Đọc kỹ câu hỏi, xem thì ngữ pháp là thì nào (mỗi thì đều có những dấu hiệu riêng của nó.    

            Ex: “yesterday”, “lastnight”, “ago”… à past simple).

      - Xác định cách chuyển cho phù hợp.

      - Đọc lại câu đã chuyển xem còn sót gì nữa không.

 

 

 

 

B. PRACTICE: Change the sentences into Reported speech

Exercise 1:

      1. The teacher asked us :" Keep silent in class, please"

            - The teacher asked us to keep silent in class.

      2. The teacher said to them :" Please improve your English pronunciation"

            - The teacher  told them to improve their English pronunciation.

      3.  He told Hoa :" Can you give Tim this dictionary?"

           - He told Hoa to  give Tim that dictionary.

      4. Mrs Nga said to my father :" Could you lend me some money?"

           - Mrs Nga asked my father to lend her some money.

      5. Nam asked us :" Keep silent in class, please"

            -> Nam asked us to keep silent in class

      6. The teacher said to them :" Please improve your Spanish pronunciation

            -> The teacher  told them to improve their Spanish pronunciation

      7. He told Hoa :" Don"t make so much noise in class"

            - >He told Hoa not to  make so much noise in class

      8. Mrs Nga said to my father :" Could you lend me some money?"

            -> Mrs Nga asked my father to lend her some money

 

 Exercise 2:

I. Change the following sentences into reported speech:

1.My father said to me: "Don"t stay there long."

2.Peter said to them: "Don"t leave the room until I come back."

3."Take my luggage to Room 145," he said to the porter.

4.The teacher said to me: "Hand this note to your parents, please."

5."Please bring me some fish soup," he said to the waitress.

6."Don"t be afraid of my dog," said the man to Kate.

7."Don"t forget to clean your teeth," said Granny to Helen.

8."Please help me with this work, Henry," said Robert.

9. “ Can you repair the bike for me ,please?”  Lan said to her brother.

10.“ Could you lend me some books, please”  He said to his friend.

11. “Can you send me this letter, please?  Hue said to his sister.

12. “ You ought to eat more vegetables and fruit” The doctor said to Mr. Tung

13. “ Quang should play sports in the afternoon” He said to me

14. “ Can you help me with my math problem,please?” Hoa said to his father

15. “ You shouldn’t stay up late.” My mother said to me

 

Answer Key:

1. My father told me not to stay there  long.

2. Peter told them not to leave the room until he came back.

3. He told the porter to take his luggage to Room 145.

4. The teacher asked me to hand that note to my parents.

5. He asked the waitress to bring him some fish soup.

6. The man told Kate not to be afraid of his dog.

7. Granny told Helen not to forget to clean her teeth.

8. Robert asked Henry to help him with that work.

9.  Lan asked her brother to repair the bike for her.

     (The doctor adviced Mr. Tung to eat more vegetables and fruit.)

      (He adviced Quang to play sports in the afternoon)

14. Hoa asked her father to help her with her math problem.

15. My mother said I shouln’t stay up late.

     (My mother adviced me not to stay up late)

  7. She said her father played golf every weekend.
  8. The teacher asked Mai if she wasn’t interested in Math.
  9. The man asked me how long it took from Vinh Phuc to Ha Noi

1. Complete the dialogues. Use the adverbs of manner in the box:

a. Hoa : Does Mrs. Nga speak English ?

    Lan  : Oh, yes. She speaks English well

b. Hoa : Ba always gets excellent grades.

     Lan : That’s because he studies  hard.

c. Hoa : That’s our bus!

    Lan : Run fast and we might catch it.

d. Hoa :I’m very sorry. I know I behaved badly.

    Lan  : It’s alright.

e. Hoa : I can’t hear you, Lan.

   Lan  : Sorry, but I’m speaking softly because I have sore throat.

3. Look at the picture of Mr. Hoa’s picture. Use the verbs in the box. Say what he should do.
